ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Jagatpur Post Graduate College is committed to imparting quality education to rural and urban students at the tertiary level. It aims to help its youth realize their dreams of obtaining degrees by pursuing Undergraduate and Post-Graduate programs in various subjects across various streams. The college aims to nurture and enhance students' moral, intellectual, spiritual, cultural, and aesthetic values throughout their education.

Jagatpur Post Graduate College, drawing inspiration from Gandhian values, was founded in 1971 on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami. The college is situated around 9 kilometers from the Cantt. Railway Station, Varanasi on the Grant Trunk Road that connects Kashi and Prayag Raj, the two ancient cities world-famous for spirituality, culture, and education. The area that surrounds was once the British Army Depot, and the seat of the Indian freedom movement, the Karmabhoomi of several freedom fighters and staunch followers of Mahatma Gandhi.

Jagatpur P. G. College was first affiliated with Gorakhpur University in 1971, and later to Veer Bahadur Singh Poorvanchal University, Jaunpur from 1988 to 2008. Finally, in 2009, it got its affiliation with Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi, a century-old university, inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. The University is renowned for its legacy of scholars and faculty like Dr. Sampoornanand, Shri Acharya Narendra Dev, Dr. Bhagwan Das, and Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta. More than half a century back, the college started in a four-room building with a couple of teachers and a small number of students. Today, Jagatpur Post Graduate College is reckoned with the leading Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) in Varanasi and the neighboring districts. The college takes immense pride in its university rank holders who bring home laurels in the form of trophies and medals year after year for creating a benchmark of excellence in academics, sports, and extra-curricular activities.

The college promotes knowledge acquisition among students with the help of well-equipped modern laboratories for various subjects. Besides, the education offered in diverse streams ensures the facility for enrolling in the most sought-after programs at the Bachelor level like B.A., BCA, BBA, B.Sc., B.F.A., and B.Com. Students are helped to carve out their career paths by selecting from a wide spectrum of traditional and modern subjects. At the UG level, the subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Industrial Microbiology, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Military and Defense Studies, Geography, Journalism and Media Studies, Home Science, Psychology, Education, Economics, History, Sociology, Sanskrit, Hindi, and English.

The college aims to facilitate seamless academic progress by offering Master’s level programs like M.Com. and M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and M.A. in Sociology, Psychology, History, Home Science, Hindi, and English. The college offers research facility leading to Ph. D. Degree in Sociology, History, Commerce, and Sanskrit.

The college seeks to cater to the academic requirement for life-long learning among students through the on-campus Centre for Distance Education established under the Rajshree Tandon Open University. The online learning platform of Infosys Springboard, with its thousands of free courses, assists in bridging the digital divide by up-skilling students and making them industry-ready.

The college keeps pace with new developments in the field of education by upgrading its infrastructure. Smart classrooms cater to the utilization of multimedia in teaching sessions. The fortnightly students’ seminars at the PG level foster the spirit of teamwork and facilitate confidence-building exercises through presentations conducted in the state-of-the-art conference hall. The college organizes workshops and seminars to enhance knowledge among faculty members and students. The lectures and discourses create opportunities for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teaching-learning experience.

The college offers opportunities to students to partake in activities like NSS, NCC, and Rovers /Rangers. The events pertaining to religion, tradition, and heritage, as well as the awareness programs on various current social issues are organized year-round in line with the national mission to sensitize students on gender equity, eco-conservation, tree plantation drive for the enhancement of green space, cleanliness week, programs for women empowerment (Mission Shakti), vittiya saksharta, water conservation, Dhanya Mahotsava for spreading awareness towards health benefits of millets. The events about the national freedom movement ( Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsava) like Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti are celebrated with great zeal and fervor by students immersing every soul in the color of Tiranga.

The college envisions yoga and fitness programs as integral to students’ health and wellbeing. The college promotes yoga practice through free offline/online classes conducted by qualified, trained faculty members. The yoga lawn with a tuft of soft grass-bed provides a pleasant ambiance for yoga and meditation on campus. The outdoor and indoor gymnasiums offer facilities for fitness. The sports ground features basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts. Various indoor games like carom and chess are available in the girls’ common room.

Today, the college nestled amidst the lush green surroundings, is home to hundreds of feathered friends, and the campus stands out as an oasis situated by the side of the six-lane highway. The step is taken by the college to enhance students' sensitivity towards nature by creating space for food, water, nests, and shelter for various species of birds from tiny sparrows to large peacocks. The mission is to create a habitat for their growth and survival in the face of extinction. Almost for the past one decade, the college has been a nodal center for Tree Plantation Drive, a state government initiative.

At Jagatpur Post Graduate College, the dedicated faculty members go above and beyond to ensure that students, while pursuing their education, also participate in various events organized by NCC, NSS, Rovers/Rangers, and sports bodies at regional and national levels. The college awards prizes and certificates for their exemplary performances. The college assists students in receiving the scholarship instituted by the state government to help with financial aid.
